The Vision

  • G Line is a bold, privately funded plan to transform the rail corridor from Richmond Station to the MCG and Melbourne Park into a new, connected part of our city. It combines housing, commercial activity, hospitality, entertainment and public realm alongside the city’s premier stadiums and arenas. It resolves transport conflicts, creates public space, jobs, year-round economic activity, and community connection, while delivering a safer, seamless arrival on event days. It’s the missing piece that can reinforce Melbourne’s position as the world’s sporting capital.

  • Grand Finals won and lost. Test matches that spilled into a fifth day. Australian Open nights that ran into the early hours. This stretch of Melbourne packs a lot of the city’s history into one of its narrowest sites, about as wide as the city block between Bourke Street and Little Collins Street.

On event days, a hundred thousand people converge here at once, while seven modes of transport compete for the same fragmented space. The rest of the time, the precinct sits largely empty.

For a location this meaningful, the gap between what it is and what it could be is significant. This is the starting point for everything G Line sets out to resolve.

  • For all its history, the precinct is hard to move through.

  • G Line started with a simple question: what if a plan for Melbourne started with the people who live here, not buildings?

Our answer is a fully integrated masterplan that spans 1.8 kilometres and six new neighbourhoods, with the MCG at its heart.

G Line prioritises creating meaningful connections between people, nature and place. This guides how G Line looks and functions, and underpins every neighbourhood, space and building proposed.

This stretch of the city has shaped Melbourne for over a century. Our vision is for that to continue, for generations to come.

    More of Melbourne

Melbourne is already one of the world’s great cities. G Line seeks to extend what the city already is, and to make more of it available to more people.

    Connective Corridor

The train yards that have long divided this part of Melbourne are resolved by a single continuous act of urban repair.

    Everything within reach

Access, comfort, and safety have been core to removing the barriers between people and making full use of G Line — because this is built for everyone.

    Give more than you take

A rail corridor becomes layered with parks, streets, and public space, laid over and around it. Across energy, water, culture, and public life, G Line creates more than it uses.

Made for every day and every occassion

The venues host 100,000 people on event day. G Line gives people reasons to stay longer and come back too — a Tuesday morning coffee, the Friday night blockbuster, or a weekend festival.

  • G Line has been shaped through a dynamic partnership. Our team brings together industry leaders, experts, consultants, and disruptors across planning, design and strategy, each with decades of industry experience. Time and expertise have been given freely, through a shared vision and passion for a better, more connected Melbourne.

  • G Line Founder & Project Director Zane Haupt

G Line Founder & Project Director Zane Haupt

As founder and project director of G Line, Zane saw the potential to transform the rail corridor around Richmond Station into a connected new part of Melbourne, alongside the MCG and the city’s sporting precinct.

Zane Haupt works at the intersection of property, infrastructure, capital and global sport. He has become known for recognising opportunities others overlook. Seeing a new way through when others see roadblocks is central to his conviction to unlock value in complex places.

With the G Line proposal, Zane pursued that vision despite considerable technical complexity, by bringing together global expertise to address the significant infrastructure challenges at its core. That foundation gave a highly credentialled and passionate Melbourne project team the opportunity to shape a place that can serve the city every day.

Zane feels a deep obligation to the place G Line could become. He wants it to welcome people of all backgrounds and abilities, with life and purpose well beyond major events. He understands how much this part of Melbourne means to the people who gather here, and the deeper significance it holds for the Wurundjeri people as Traditional Owners.
